Il Sentiero della Castagna Granda ha uno sviluppo complessivo di 4,8 km ed ha inizio nel centro di Monteu Roero (Cn) da Piazza Roma, splendido punto di osservazione e vera balconata naturale su alcune fra le più belle Rocche del Roero.
Si segue la via principale (Via Umberto I) in direzione di Torino, e non appena usciti dal paese si svolta a destra seguendo l’indicazione per Frazione San Grato, su un tratto in comune con il sentiero S1, il Grande Sentiero delle Rocche del Roero. Dopo circa 400 mt si lascia il sentiero “S1” e proseguendo sulla strada asfaltata si incontrano a sinistra i ruderi della cascina Belis: qui, verso la metà dell’Ottocento avvenne uno dei fatti di sangue che più segnarono la vita dell’epoca. Fu infatti compiuto un feroce omicidio per mano del terribile bandito di origini canalesi Francesco Delpero, la cui storia è narrata nel libro di Milo Julini “Il terrore del Roero”. Il luogo fu in seguito abbandonato e lasciato a testimonianza del fenomeno del banditismo nel Roero.
Dopo circa 200 mt il sentiero svolta a destra verso la Cascina Avaj; dopo la borgata omonima, seguendo in discesa una strada sterrata, si giunge ad un’imponente radura di castagni secolari, dove primeggia la “castagna granda”. Si tratta di un vero e proprio monumento vegetale, catalogato dalla Regione Piemonte nel volume “Alberi monumentali del Piemonte” come uno fra i più vecchi della Regione: si stima infatti che abbia un’età intorno ai 400 anni. L’altezza dell’esemplare è di 12 mt, la circonferenza del tronco a petto d’uomo di 10,50 mt, mentre la circonferenza alla base del tronco è di 14,70 mt. Sostare sotto i suoi rami centenari o semplicemente soffermarsi nella radura che lo accoglie è senz’altro un’esperienza che vale la pena fare.
Nell’ultima parte del Sentiero, che chiude l’anello, si attraversano i tipici boschi roerini, già noti ai romani come la “silva popularis”, tra cui svettano maestosi pini silvestri che puntano il cielo, fino a giungere ad una strada di cresta, punto panoramico di grande impatto visivo, da cui, nelle giornate limpide, la vista spazia dal castello medievale di Monteu Roero ai centri storici degli altri borghi di sommità delle Rocche, fino alla catena alpina. Qui l’anello del Sentiero della Castagna Granda si chiude riportandovi in paese.

Description: Available The Path of Castagna Granda has a total length of 4 , 8 km away and starts in the center of Monteu Roero (Cn) from Piazza Roma, a beautiful vantage point and real natural balcony on some of the most beautiful Rocche del Roero.
follow the main street (Via Umberto I) in direction of Turin, and not just out of town, turn right and follow signs for Fraction Saint Gratus, a trait in common with the path S1, the Great Trail of Rocche del Roero. After about 400 meters you leave the path "S1" and continuing on the paved road to the left you encounter the ruins of the farmhouse Belis: here, in the mid nineteenth century it came to pass one of the bloody events which marked the life of the time. It was in fact made a ferocious murder at the hands of the terrible bandit origins Canallers Delpero Francis, whose story is told in the book of Milo Julini "The terror of the Roero." The site was later abandoned and left to witness the phenomenon of banditry in Roero.
After about 200 meters the path turns right towards Cascina Avaj; after the township of the same name, following down a dirt road, you come to a massive clearing of chestnut trees, where stands the "chestnut granda." It is a true monument plant, cataloged by the Region of Piedmont in the book "Monumental trees in Piedmont" as one of the oldest in the region: it is estimated to have an age of around 400 years. The height of the specimen is 12 meters, the trunk circumference at breast height of 10.50 meters, while the circumference of the base of the trunk is 14.70 mt. Stand under its branches centenarians or simply linger in the clearing that receives it is definitely an experience worth doing.
Last part of the trail, which closes the loop, crossing the forests typical Roero, already known to the Romans as the "silva popularis," including towering majestic pines pointing at the sky until you reach a ridge road, scenic spot of great visual impact, from which, on a clear day, the view stretches from the castle Medieval Monteu Roero to the historical centers of the other villages of the top of the Rocche, to the Alps. Here the ring of the Chestnut Trail Granda closes bringing you back in the country.
