Die Vereinten Nationen haben 2011 zum Internationalen Jahr der Wälder erklärt. Ausgangslage hierfür ist der weltweite Waldverlust in einer Größenordnung von 13 Mio. Hektar pro Jahr. Die Internationale Naturschutzorganisation IUCN hat vorgerechnet, dass hierdurch mehr als 16.000 Arten vom Aussterben bedroht sind: 25% aller Säugetiere, 30% aller Amphibienarten und 12% der Vogelarten. Hierzulande werden Wälder allerdings kontrolliert und nachhaltig bewirtschaftet. Dabei stehen Klimaanpassung, zusätzliche Rohstoffmobilisierung sowie die Erhaltung und Verbesserung der Biodiversität im Vordergrund. Gerade im bevölkerungsreichen Nordrhein-Westfalen hat der Wald eine Vielfalt von Funktionen zu erfüllen. Er nutzt uns als Holzlieferant und schafft 250.000 Arbeitsplätze und einen Jahresumsatz von mehr als 30 Milliarden Euro. Er schützt Wasser, Boden und Klima, er dient der Erholung bei Wanderungen, Sport und anderen Freitzeitaktivitäten. Zu diesen Aktivitäten zählt auch das Mountainbiken. Deshalb fand ich es gut, dass das Regionalforstamt Kurkölnisches Sauerland zusammen mit dem SGV Herscheid http://www.sgv-herscheid.de/zu einer Tour (mit waldspezifischen Erläuterungen) ins Ebbe eingeladen hatte. Unter Leitung von Förster Matthias Borgmann fanden sich viele Mountainbiker zu der 18-Km-Tour ein und wurden nicht enttäuscht. Am Ende der Tour konnte man sich auf Parkplatz 5 an der Nordhelle - wer wollte - mit einem "Dicken Sauerländer" wieder stärken. Herzlichen Dank.
